Kardajala Kirridarra ~ Warmala (Young Girls Song)

Beautiful Kardajala Kirridarra release a poignant and picturesque video for the stripped-back version of Warmala (Young Girls Song) by David Williams and Sooji Kim. Sung in the Mudburra language and filmed around Eleanor and Janey Dixon’s community of Marlinja, NT by by Stuart Liddell and João Dujon Pereira, the video offers a powerful insight into the way girls can, and should, be nourished and nurtured into womanhood.

“This song holds the feeling of a young girl learning about the next phase of becoming a woman. Land and body, a woman and earth transforms together as one,” explains Eleanor Dixon. “This teaching is taught at the age where a wamarla (a young girl) becomes a kirri (a young woman).” Cry over the sweetness of the white spirals painted in the girls’ tiny flat chests, as they sit in circle with an older woman by their sides, sifting through the earth and learning everything that’s rightfully theirs to learn. Happy, healthy, thriving, safe, free, this is the way it should be and always have been for the little girls of this land.

Having generated some excellent BIGSOUND buzz, Kardajala Kirridarra now have a debut self-titled album and debut headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney coming up in January, plus a bunch of festival dates. Check it all out below.
Now enjoy this lovely beauty, filmed paying all respects to the Mudburra people whose language and culture they honour, and the community of Marlinja where they are from.  WildnFree also sends apologies, respect and love to the Wurundjeri people who host her graciously on their land each day.
