Words With The Paper Kites’ Sam Rasmussen

WildnFree hearts The Paper Kites and all their intriguing plans. With the twelvefour national album tour well behind them, the band’s now plotting Midnight, a 5 capital-city sit-down theatre tour with a bunch of surprises in store. Facebook fans are fuelling the intrigue. “So is it a gig or a theatre production?” asks one. “This isn’t a normal show? It’s some movie thing?” asks another. Speaking to bass player Sam Rasmussen, WildnFree gets the lowdown on Midnight, getting out of your comfort zone, and the beautiful final trilogy video for Renegade.

“There’ll be all sorts of stuff going on during the Midnight shows,” explains Sam. “We’ll have apartment windows hanging above and behind us, we’re going to project different stories into the windows to draw people’s attention around to the different stories.” Don’t freak out, but they’re also going to turn off all the lights. “We’re going to play a few songs in total blackout, no lights, no projections, nothing!” he continues. “We’ll just be drawing everyone’s attention to the music at that point, but we’ll have some bigger, flashier moments too.”

If you need to shake it up and step out of the your comfort zone, The Paper Kites are showing you exactly how it’s done. “We’re genuinely really excited and really nervous about it,” confesses Sam, honestly. “Normally we’re pretty systematic in our tour planning, we get a whiteboard and list all the songs we’d like to do, we shuffle the deck, we work out a nice flow, then bang, we’ve got the tour,” he says, spilling the beans on the average day in The Paper Kites office. “But since we’ve toured Australia a lot, and we’ve already done the twelvefour tour, we decided to do something totally different, like play seated theatres and make it a theatrical immersive experience.”

Doubters, calm down and relax. Sam now gives you a definite answer on whether or not you’ll be attending an actual gig. “Yes, it’s a live show and we’re playing all our music,” he confirms 100 percent. “But we’re approaching it differently, we’re doing a lot of different things. Even figuring out the practicalities of playing in the dark is pretty nerve-wracking” he says, with a laugh. “Plus, we’re starting in Sydney, playing the biggest venue of the tour, which is terrifying! Usually, we’d start somewhere smaller to warm up first.” Sydney fans, that’s your cue to go and give them nothing but love.

The beautifully shot clip for Renegade, the final piece of the twelvefour video clip trilogy, is also up for discussion. “This time we went down the ‘young punks hanging out having fun’ path, unlike the boyfriend-girlfriend story of the first two.” explains Sam. Working again with director Dan Huiting, the clip was shot in Minneapolis and tells the tale of a gang of kids breaking into an aquatic cinema, a glorious-sounding place that Melbourne sadly lacks, shortly before 4am. “We wanted to tell a story of friendship and camaraderie this time,” says Sam. “Dan did it again beautifully, like he did on Revelator Eyes.”

Although living the dream plotting gorgeous video trilogies and spectacular theatre shows, The Paper Kites are still a little unsure of how Midnight will pan out. “The plan is to hit the ground running” says Sam, cautiously optimistic “There’s heaps of people working on it, and hopefully, it’ll be epic.”

Of course it will be epic, of course it will. Since any live show performed by The Paper Kites is guaranteed to be compelling, intimate and packed with adoring fans, Midnight should be all that and more. If you have any doubt on their capacity to execute something beautifully cinematic, watch Renegade and rest assured:
