Words With Citizen Kay

The keys to the city of WildnFree now belong to Sir Citizen Kay, a man who delivers not only ARIA and AIR-nominated hip-hop gold, but legendary answers to a bunch of questions, OFTEN IN CAPITALS because he’s just that type of guy. Make sure you get around debut album With The People, it’s all class lovers of WildnFree, all class. Watch your shoulder when listening, you won’t be able to stop it popping. Currently in the middle of a national tour, Mr Kay halts his MC duties to deliver the below news to the people:

Citizen Kay hello!  Congrats on your debut album With The People.  What’s it feeling like to be you right now?

Look, usually I’m pretty damn pumped to be me but the last few weeks have seen a major spike in the feel goods department! So much news and so much happening!!

How long have you been working on the album for? Who did you work with during the process?

The album overall was about 8-9 months from memory, that was from say the first beat idea to the final masters of everything.

I worked with a fellow Canberra man by the name of Ben Garden, he’s the legend behind all the production and music!

You’re on tour right now. Best moments so far?

Well the first show was a UNI event thing and we were the second act, BUT MAIN ACT WAS REGURGITATOR AND THEY WERE HOT FIIYYA!! First time I’d seen them and it was hella sweet BUT that’s not the best moment, just hada say they were dope haha. For me, the best part about this all, being (apart from that first show) a headline tour, the fact that people are coming through specifically to see me play, and even more crazy that people are singing along to the songs. IT’S SUPER UNREAL FOR ME!!

I love the line in Life Gives You Lemons – “You just cut the fuckers up in 20 seconds don’t sweat it”.  This is a philosophy I can fully get behind. What’s the story behind this track?

SO first of all – any brass instrument is my jam. Second of all – saxophone is the sexiest instrument on the planet.

Now that’s out of the way, some of the time if I’m lucky words/concepts will just come to me as I’m listening to the music. This did NOT happen for this song, or at least not in the way I’m used to. Instead, my best friend is also a rapper (goes by the name Jimmy Pike) and I had one of his tracks stuck in my head…now this track…ready? THIS TRACK HAS THAT LINE IN ONE OF THE VERSES! And, it was one of those things where I said the line over the Life Gives You Lemons track, aaaannnd then it just never left haha. That line (thanks, Jimmy for letting me use your line) sparked the concept for the song.

Not sure how much you’ve looked into the lyrics for that song, but it’s actually about being black and growing up here in Australia. Being a minority but still growing up with the Aus culture of seemingly never being phased about anything. The whole concept was the lyrics represented what went on in my head while the music reflected the carefree, fun attitude that people had come to know me for. DEEEEEEEP RIGHT?

The video clip is also pretty great, almost like a bad Masterchef episode. It looks like someone’s just got a GoPro on filming it.  Tell me about it.

You pretty much just nailed this video haha.

This is the first video of mine that wasn’t made by Canberra director, Nic Vevers (because he was overseas), but it was made by one of his good friends who he put me onto, Sydney director, Dale Alexander Bremner, and yeah, basically just chucked on a GoPro and made guacamole in the best way I’ve ever seen. Ever.

You missed out on the AIR Award for Best Independent Hip Hop Album – damn!  What’s your thoughts on this grave injustice 😉

On the real, for me (like with the ARIA nomination),it’s a massive deal just be nominated. I’m still really new and beginner at all of this and just to be put in the same group as the other nominees is a huge achievement for me! It’s incentive to not slow down on this path and that slowly but surely I really am beginning to achieve the long term goals I’ve set for myself.

Thanks Mr Kay!

Thank YOU, Annelise!
